Sydney Harbour Bridge
|
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Australia. This bridge carries three different types of traffic across the water -- pedestrian, vehicular and rail. The bridge spans from the Sydney central business district and the North Shore area. Until 1967, the bridge was the tallest structure in Australia. Today it has the distinction of being the fourth largest bridge of its type in the world and the highest steel arch bridge in the world. Tourists from all over the world flock to this bridge as it is an iconic part of both the city of Sydney and the continent of Australia.
For many years, the southeastern pylon of the bridge served as both an attraction and lookout point. Here you used to be able to find telescopes and even old arcade games which took pennies. Today, the main attraction related to the Harbour Bridge is called the BridgeClimb. Began in 1998, BridgeClimb allows visitors to scale the southern portion of the bridge. There are dawn to dusk tours in addition to special night climbing excursions. The tours are done in groups and climbers are given protective gear. They are also given an instructional orientation session to prepare them for the adventure.
The climbers are led by experienced guides and secured to the bridge carefully by a lifeline made from strong wire. The climb begins at the eastern portion of the bridge and makes its way to the top. When the top is reached, the climbers will be led to the western portion of the bridge which is where the descent will take place. It takes approximately three to four hours to climb the bridge. There is another option to BridgeClimb which is called Discovery Climb. This is a bit different because it takes the climbers through the lower portion of the bridge.
On the Discovery Climb, you get to climb to the lower chord and climb a large staircase which leads to a summit platform. Whether you choose the traditional BridgeClimb or the Discovery Climb, you are sure to remember the experience for the rest of your life. Climbers are not allowed to bring along cameras or any other items. You can, however, purchase photos that were taken by the climbing guides. Everyone must submit to a metal detector and even an alcohol breathalyzer for safety reasons. To climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it costs anywhere from $190 to $300 AUS. This may seem like a lot, but you really can't put a price on an experience like this!
