History Of sydney Opera House

The history of Sydney Opera House is not a history that dates back as far as the Egyptian pyramids or even the Statue of Liberty, but it is a compelling story nonetheless. Today, the opera house serves as the most recognizable building in Australia and hosts thousands of shows per year. In addition, there are hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit the opera house annually. This iconic building is situated on Bennelong Point and looks like a sailboat on the harbour. It is definitely the most photographed building in all of Australia and is also close to the legendary Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The opera house has only been operational since 1973 and was created not by an Australian, but a Danish architect named Jorn Utzon. Although 1973 was the year the building opened, its history actually dates back even further. In the latter portion of the 1950s, the government of New South Wales created a fund to finance the building of the opera house and launched a competition to choose the design. Out of all the competitors, Jorn Utzon was deemed the winner. However, his innovative design was slightly beyond the engineering knowledge of the time. Therefore, the design had to be reworked before being built. It was not until 1961 that Utzon was able to figure out how to construct the incredible sail-like roof.

In 1966, Utzon actually resigned from designing the opera house because there were so many disputes about finances and design. The facility was completed by other builders using the basic design created by Utzon. The completion came almost 20 years after the idea for the opera house was born. Today, the Utzon Room is a tribute to the man who originally designed the opera house and is done in his vision for the interior of the facility. This redesigned reception hall was opened in 2004.

One cannot talk about the history of Sydney Opera House without talking about the performances. The first performance ever to take place at this building was War and Peace, performed by the Australian Opera. There are numerous companies that call the opera house their home, including Sydney Symphony, Sydney Theater Company, the Australian Ballet, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Bangarra Dance Theater, Bell Shakespeare and more. Today, you will find numerous events taking place at this incredible building, as well as detailed tours that take you behind the scenes.
